Getting started at work
Business
cards
More
than likely, someone in your office will help you order business
cards, but if you need to do it, here's the link. You'll need an
authorizing signature to complete your order.
Computers,
email, and telephones
This
link will help you get information on the accounts you'll need to
set up email, and if necessary, your computer and telephone. Many
services are arranged for you by your department, so check with
your supervisor. Even so, you'll want to read the Computer Use Policy
and find out about other services such as ergonomics
training and resources.
Emergencies
and campus police
Ask
your supervisor about building emergencies (where to go in the event
of a fire alarm, how to check in to let someone know you are out
of the building.) For information on campus emergency preparedness,
go to http://oep.berkeley.edu/.
If you have an office emergency and need immediate assistance, dial
9-911. For more information about the University Police Department,
go to http://police.berkeley.edu/.
Employee
ID numbers and Cal 1 Card
Your
ID number will be assigned as soon as your record is entered into
the Human Resources Management System when you are hired. It can
take one or two days before the Cal 1 Card (photo ID) system is able to verify
your employment and can issue your Cal 1 Card.
Holidays
and other dates
On the
campus
calendar, you can search for events by date or event type. The University provides 13 holidays
per year.
Job
classification and pay programs
Your
job is placed in a generic classification. For information, go to
http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/hrpay.htm;
scroll down to "Job Specifications and Evaluation Tools. Information
about pay programs is found on the same page.
Library
privileges
Staff
and faculty employees are entitled to library privileges, and your
Cal 1 Card will enable you to use them right away.
New
employee orientation
Human Resources gives an orientation for staff employees
every other month.
For more information on New Employee Orientation and how to sign up, go to http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/neo/neocmps.htm
Parking
and transportation
If you
drive to your job, you'll need a parking pass to use the University
lots. If you've found how hard it is to park even with a pass, maybe
you'll want to try using public transportation--some discounts are
available.
Paydays
and payroll
schedules
You'll
either receive your pay on the first of the month for the previous
month or on a semi-monthly basis. Your supervisor will know which
schedule you are on and when you should turn in your timesheet.
Personnel
policies and union contracts
Academic
employees are covered by the Academic Personnel Manual, which is
posted on the Academic
Personnel Office website. If
you are a staff employee, your job is covered by either a contract
negotiated between the University and a union, or by Personnel Policies
for Staff (PPSM). Check with your supervisor to see what you are
covered by. If you are covered by PPSM, you are entitled to a copy
of the policies. Ask your supervisor how you can obtain one. You
can read the policies on line at http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/hrpolicy.htm#ppsm.
Information about unions and copies of the contracts are posted
on this website at http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/hrlabor.htm.
Some of the contracts state that a copy of the contract is to be
provided to each covered employee by the University. Check with
your supervisor. You can also look under "Access" in the
contract.
There are also other policies that are unique to the Berkeley campus and apply to all staff employees. These are listed at http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/policy/hrpolicy.htm.
