Compensation: Student Assistant Rates

Effective January 1, 2007, the minimum salary rate for the Berkeley campus Student Assistant I (4922U: PSS) position will be moved from $6.75/hour to $8.00/hour.

Student Assistant positions are created and reserved only for registered UCB students. The positions are slotted into one of four levels within the Student Assistant I – IV job series (4919 – 4922).

Setting salaries within the broad student assistant salary range should be based upon the salary (hourly rate) one would typically pay a staff employee to perform the same function, perhaps discounted slightly in acknowledgment that students (1) are not at UCB primarily to earn a living, but are here for the primary purpose of being a student, and (2) are generally not held to the same level of performance and/or accountability as career or limited term employees.

Starting salaries are typically set between the salary range minimum and the 1st quartile of the salary range. One may consider adjusting a student employee’s salary after one year. Please note that the Berkeley campus living wage does not apply to student assistant positions because their primary relationship at the University is as a student and not as an employee.
