Classification Process for Non-Represented Positions

- Manager uses Berkeley Job Builder functionality to download the job description template that is the closest match to the employee’s current job responsibilities. Track changes feature is left enabled (e.g. Aerospace Engineer 4 is the new job description template used since the manager feels the responsibilities are no longer at the Aerospace Engineer 3 level)

Manager reviews the job description with the Department HR Manager (DHRM) to ensure the home department supports the request.
Note: If the recommended job falls in the MSP program, the classification request is reviewed with the Control Unit Administrator to ensure VC support for the position review, not necessarily the level requested. The only exceptions to this process are for highly specialized professional positions in the Engineering, Health Care, Research & Laboratory, and Sports & Recreation job fields (please refer to attached list of Engineering, Health Care, Research & Laboratory, and Sports & Recreation positions not requiring VC support prior to review). If the classification request is for a job that is in the PSS program, the CUA does not need to provide an approval. - The DHRM or Control Unit Administrator (CUA)--if MSP-level request--submits the classification request to the Compensation Unit. If the request is for a reclassification, DHRM or CUA copies compdesk@berkeley.edu, which will trigger an acknowledgment response.
- The Compensation Unit evaluates the classification request and contacts the DHRM if additional information is needed.

For PSS level requests, the Compensation Unit determines whether the (re)classification is approved or denied.
For MSP level requests, the Compensation Unit provides a recommendation to all Vice Chancellors' offices for review and comment. The requesting Vice Chancellor has final decision making authority.
- The Compensation Unit communicates the PSS level decision to the DHRM or CUA, as appropriate. The appropriate CUA communicates MSP decisions back to the requesting home department and to the Compensation Unit.
