HCM: Org Nodes
ORG_NODE is an HR-BAIRS-specific field that identifies the Berkeley campus organizational unit with which a job is associated. Values of this field identify nodes on the campus Organization Tree, from Level 2 (Control Unit) through Level 7 (Organization).
Organization tree reports that list these codes and their hierarchical relationship are available and updated on a monthly basis. Below is an illustration of a very small piece of the organization tree. Note that this particular example does not utilize Levels 5 or 6 of the organization tree (use of these levels is optional for campus departments):
| 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Campus | Control Unit | Division | Dept | Discipline/Group | Subunit | Org | Description |
| UCBAL | UC Berkeley ("UCB All") | ||||||
| COLLS | College of Letters & Science | ||||||
| LS1HU | Div of Arts & Humanities | ||||||
| HENGL | English Dept | ||||||
| 12615 | HENGL English Gen Ops |
ORG_NODE maps to the field labeled "Department" on the "Work Location" panel of Job Data in HCM. Since the value of this field might represent a Department (Level 4), or other levels of the campus Organization Tree between Level 2 and Level 7 (such as Discipline/Group), ORG_NODE was used instead of DEPARTMENT in the reporting environment. Note: As of Sept 2002, about 75% of job records in the Data Warehouse are assigned an Org_Node at Level 4; about 25% at Level 5; and less than 1% in Levels 2, 3, 6, and 7).
Organization Code
Despite the similarity in their names, ORG_NODE is not the same as Organization in a BFS financial chartstring (ORG in BAIRS 2 GL reports, ORG_CODE in the HR-BAIRS data warehouse).
- ORG_NODE identifies a position in the Berkeley organizational hierarchy with which a person's job is associated.
- Organization or ORG_CODE in a chart string identifies a General Ledger cost center.
Here is an example of how it might work in practice (refer to the sample Org Tree chart, above):
- For an employee who holds a job in the English Department, HR-BAIRS rows pertaining to that job contain the code "HENGL" in the ORG_NODE field. This same code would appear in the "Department" field on the "Work Location" panel of Job Data in the HCM application.
- The employee's Job Earnings Distribution row(s) in HCM (and also in corresponding rows in HR-BAIRS and PPS) include an ORG_CODE belonging to the English Department (e.g., 12615).
