HCM: Concurrent Jobs

A concurrent job in HCM is an additional appointment (also known as "employment instance") whose dates overlap another active appointment.

Common examples include:

  • A student with two or more part-time jobs.
  • A Graduate Student with a Fall GSR appointment and a Spring GSI appointment.
  • A Professor with additional academic compensation.
  • A Staff employee doing a part-time assignment while working in the regular job on reduced time.

When the dates of two appointments overlap, the appointments cannot be entered as two rows on the same record because both appointments need to be in effect at the same time (both are current rows). The overlapping job must be entered on a separate record.

Start by going to Workforce Administration > Personal Information > Organizational Relationships > Person Organizational Summary to review the person's current appointments. Once you have determined that you need to add a completely new job record (there are no other terminated additional jobs you can reactivate and use), you can click the Add Employment Instance link. This component creates a new additional employment record.

If there are Terminated records that could be reused, please reactivate one of those instead of creating a new record. If the terminated record belongs to another department you will first need to Set Alternate Dept ID. Then add a job level rehire-additional job row and enter the new job.
