Departmental Overview:
The Women's Institute for Leadership Development (WILD) for Human Rights engages with individuals and communities globally to advance human rights and social justice. Through innovative education, training, research, and advocacy, the organization mobilizes communities to challenge systems and institutions through the leadership of women, particularly young women of color.
WILD for Human Rights joins Berkeley Law as an initiative of the Miller Institute for Global Challenges in the Law, at UC Berkeley School of Law. The Miller Institute seeks to empower populations with limited access to legal processes and economic resources, and strives to support the political and legal structures that promote human welfare.
WILD for Human Rights will continue this work at the Miller Institute and will include global rights issues in its scope. WILD for Human Rights will utilize its domestic constituency and experience in its focus on rights projects that arise at the intersections between US domestic and foreign policy.
Responsibilities:
This position will serve as the Director primarily responsible for the activities and the structure of the WILD Initiative, reporting to the Faculty Director and the Executive Director of the Miller Institute. The director of WILD for Human Rights will also be an associate director of the Miller Institute, and will:
- ensure that the organization has a long-range strategy which achieves WILD’s mission and that of the Miller Institute, and towards which WILD makes consistent and timely progress
- ensure that adequate funds are available to carry out the work
- provide leadership in developing and implementing programs including project management, research and writing/editing, training and advocacy
- identify, build, nurture and maintain effective relationships with diverse constituencies and serve as one of the principal advocates for the initiative to its various publics
- possess high levels of knowledge in the following subject matter areas: human rights in the US; the impact of the intersection of race, gender, class, sexuality and other identities on the enjoyment of rights; human rights of women; and social justice movements
- strengthen the ability of community based human rights and social justice organizations to become more effective and informed participants in the local and national level debates and discussions on human rights policy and implementation
Within the first year:

Required Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (Ph.D. or JD) in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
- Advanced comprehensive knowledge of relevant external constituencies including human rights, women, anti-racism, LGBTQ, poverty, and the research and policy community locally, nationally and internationally
- Advanced knowledge of human rights and/ or civil rights policies and law at national and/ or international levels
- Minimum five years experience working in the domestic human rights and/or social justice arena required
- Advanced written, verbal, interpersonal communication and leadership skills, including attentive listening, skill in thinking quickly and responding appropriately
- Advanced skill in advocating for and representing the institution to its various publics, including funders and media
- Advanced skill in understanding constituency needs as relates to institutional needs and skill in designing solutions or strategies to achieve consensus
- Advanced analytical, negotiation and political acumen skills
- Strategic planning skills.
- Leadership/management skills, including skills to lead, direct, supervise, mentor, evaluate and motivate students and relevant staff
- Advanced skill to develop and implement strategies designed to achieve rights–based policy outcome
- Ability to rapidly become familiar with new fields and research literatures
- Experience in policy development and analysis required
- Advanced ability to set priorities and demonstrate sound judgment, manage multiple projects and work with a team and a broad range of internal and external constituencies essential
- Experience using data bases including web based
- Some travel required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate studies in human rights, race, gender, sexuality and/or public policy preferred.
Salary & Benefits:
Salary range: $60,000 - $80,000

This is a 1 year contract position, with possibility of renewal.
