About working at Berkeley: Staff compensation

The University offers competitive pay and a generous benefits package. Our pay programs are based on merit, which means that pay increases are determined by performance.

Many of our positions (also called titles) are classified and placed into broad salary ranges. Employee pay is based upon one's experience and set within the appropriate market range for the title. Most positions are grouped in grades based on similarities in market pay.

Some positions are exclusively represented by labor unions and pay ranges or pay steps are subject to negotiated agreements.

We are currently designing a new compensation program at UC Berkeley. Our compensation philosophy is to pay competitive salaries to attract and retain the best workforce. We are now realigning our compensation structure and management tools to better support this philosophy.
