Glossary

Best Practices Group - The subgroup of the Policy Access Project Team that conducted research into best practices at other university policy websites. Research focused on policy development, format, and dissemination.

BFS - Berkeley Financial System

BOI - Business Officers Institute

High-Risk Policy - Policies labeled "high risk" are policies that if compliance is violated, can have a negative fiscal impact (e.g. lawsuit) on the department and/or the university.

HRMS - Human Resources Management System

LDP - Leadership Development Program
A UC Berkeley staff training program to develop highly skilled and motivated leaders.

listserv - A method of distributing information to subscribers via email.

Metadata - Often referred to as "data about data", metadata describes the content, quality, condition, and other characteristics of data. Metadata can be used to improve and speed searches.

Metrics - Tools to measure and evaluate success of a project.

MSO - Management Services Officer
A high-level administrative staff position, often responsible for overseeing departmental business and administrative functions including policy compliance.

OPAC - Office of Policy Access and Coordination

OPTRS - Online Payroll Time Reporting System

ORU - Organized Research Unit
An administrative unit supporting research in more than one academic department.

Policy Access Project Team - The Leadership Development Program group assigned to the Policy Access Project.

Policy Maker Group - The subgroup of the Policy Access Project Team that identified and interviewed policy makers on campus.

Portal - A customizable website that serves as a gateway for users when connecting to the Web (e.g. MyHaas, BLU).

Project Team - The nine members of the Leadership Development Program assigned to the Policy Access Project.

Scope Document - The document prepared by the Policy Access Project's sponsor defining the parameters of the research project and expected deliverables from the Policy Access Project Team.

SISC - Staff Infrastructure Steering Committees

Survey Analysis Group - The subgroup of the Policy Access Project Team that focused on survey analysis and reporting results.

Survey Research Center (SRC) - SRC provides a full range of technical services for social research conducted by institutions, for governmental agencies, and for other groups seeking research assistance. http://srcweb.berkeley.edu

URL - Uniform Resource Locator. The unique address of a webpage.

VCAC - Vice Chancellor's Administrative Council

Workaround - Bypassing official policies and procedures to achieve a desired end result.
