Classification and compensation overview
The Compensation Unit provides strategic compensation planning. Services include classification analyses, salary management consultation, administering merits, special award and recognition programs, and annual salary survey participation. To contact the Compensation unit, please see the department assignment list.
Detailed information about the current compensation system can be found in the Guide to Managing Human Resources.
The Berkeley campus is currently designing a new compensation structure based on the June 2001 Compensation Advisory Committee recommendations and the Chancellor's response.
Job evaluation or classification process
Following organizational or personnel changes, departmental needs and individual positions evolve. Positions are reviewed by the Compensation unit or by committees and individuals who have been delegated this responsibility. Detailed information about this process and specific forms are also available on line.
Classification guides
Specific job evaluation tools are available for many job titles. Locally developed guidelines for the Berkeley campus outline the criteria that define the different levels of the positions.
In addition, some titles are systemwide among all of the University of California locations. The UC systemwide job specifications are available from the UC Irvine website at http://www.hr.uci.edu/uc-ser/uc-ser-idx.html
UCB pay structure
Many positions are grouped in grades based on similarities in market pay. To view the salary ranges please see http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/PAY2/pssgrade.php. Most grades are linked to salary ranges and for a list of the positions in each grade, please see http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/pay/07ranges.htm.
Positions covered by labor union contracts may also be in step- based pay programs. More detailed pay information about specific UCB titles is available at http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/PAY2/
Non-academic student positions are classified separately. For more information on what types of positions students typically occupy and for the current rates, please see http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/pay/07asstrate.htm
