Guidance and Resources for Managing Transitions
Given the current economic environment, departments are looking at ways to continue carrying out the University's mission in a time of reduced funds and related challenges. For last December's Department Human Resources Managers meeting, Human Resources asked a panel of campus experts to share their expertise on strategies for creating and maintaining positive working environments while dealing with a constrained budget situation.
Panelists reminded departments that adhering to bargaining agreements and personnel policies will be important to maintain equity and fairness if workforce reductions are needed. Departments were also encouraged to strengthen their communication strategies to promote transparency and to help staff adapt to the shift in business conditions.
CARE Services can confidentially assist supervisors, managers, chairs, deans, and other administrators with workplace challenges. These may be organizational concerns, such as restructuring, personnel transitions, layoffs, and critical incidents, or individual concerns, such as job performance, difficult behavior, threat of violence, or a personal crisis. Management consultations are available by phone or in person; for more information or to schedule a consultation, please call 643-7754.
As departments work to minimize the impact of budget cuts, they will also be challenged with managing the stress of difficult transitions. The Staff Ombuds Office can provide a confidential and impartial perspective to staff who would like to discuss their workplace options. Employees who have questions about their employment rights and benefits can find a wealth of information available on the HR website. Additional information about benefits and employment services is available on the UCOP At Your Service website.
