Compensation and Classification

Technical Committee

Background
The campus Technical Committee, composed of senior information systems managers and employees, developed a questionnaire to be used in the classification review of positions proposed for Programmer/Analyst, Computing Resource Specialists, and Computer Resource Manager positions.

  • The Technical Committee reviews and evaluates positions proposed for Programmer/Analyst III or above and all positions proposed for the Computer Resource Manager job family. The Committee also occasionally reviews lower level positions, primarily those that reflect a new use of the IT job families on the campus.
  • New or vacant positions requiring the Committee’s review (i.e., at the P/A III level or above) are reviewed within a week of receipt in HR, either via electronic submissions or fax.
  • The Committee needs the same information for vacant positions as it does for reclassification requests. (The Physical, Environmental and Mental Demands (PEM) form is not necessary for classification, but it is necessary for listing open positions.)

Tools

  • The Job Description Template, available in Microsoft Word format at http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/forms/jobdestemplate.doc, focuses on the key information necessary to evaluate IT positions in order to reduce the time to prepare, review, and evaluate them. Use the Job Description Template for both the reclassification of existing positions and the classification of newly created positions. The department’s organization chart is required with the Job Description Template and should include the names, payroll and working titles, if any, of employees in the unit.
  • The Committee also developed the Programmer/Analyst and Computer Resource Manager Job Matrices for use with the Job Description Template to help properly classify these positions. The Matrices can be found at http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/pay/palevels.htm and http://hrweb.berkeley.edu/pay/crmlevel.htm.
  • Departments are encouraged to submit the Job Description template electronically to their Compensation Consultant for all appropriate technical positions. You may download the file, modify and fill it in, then send it as an email attachment (along with an organization chart) to your department's Compensation Consulant with a copy to compdesk@berkeley.edu.

PLEASE NOTE: The processes above apply to requests submitted to Human Resources. Please follow your standard departmental procedure for submitting classification requests and ensuring that the proper approvals are obtained before sending the request forward to Human Resources.

Questions regarding the Job Description Template may be directed to your department’s Compensation Analyst.
