Identification of Underutilized Areas and Establishment of Goals

As mandated by federal requirements, UC Berkeley annually identifies job areas where women and minorities are underutilized and uses this information to establish affirmative action goals. [1] The following flow chart [2] illustrates how this process is accomplished.

Flowchart of process of determining underutilization of minorities and women.

NOTES:
[1] Underutilization is determined by comparing the actual percentage of minority or female employees in the work force with their availability in the relevant labor market.

[2] Adapted from University of California, San Diego Abridged Staff Affirmative Action Plan, November 1995 - February 1997.

[3] If the difference between the availability percentage and the UC Berkeley work force percentage multiplied by the total employees in the job group is one or more (using a .5 or greater = 1 rounding formula), underutilization exists.
