Recognition & Achievement Awards
UC Berkeley currently offers two separate recognition programs for campus employees, the Staff Appreciation and Recognition (STAR) Plan and Non-Cash Awards.
The UC Office of the President has developed guidelines for a systemwide recognition program, called the Staff Appreciation and Recognition (STAR) Plan, to acknowledge and reward exemplary performance and contributions by employees in the UC system. It is governed by Personnel Policies for Staff Members (PPSM) 34 and provides guidelines for all University cash recognition awards.
UC Berkeley offers Achievement and Spot Awards under the UC STAR Plan. These awards are similar to the Achievement and Spot Awards previously offered on the Berkeley campus.
Campus Guidelines: Purpose and Type
STAR Awards at UC Berkeley are intended to recognize and reward individuals, and teams of employees, for demonstrating Berkeley's Operating Principles:
- We include and excel, together
- We imagine and innovate
- We simplify
- We are accountable to each other
- We focus on service
The STAR Plan includes two types of awards:
- Achievement Awards ($2000 - $10,000): For sustained, exceptional performance and/or significant contributions above and beyond normal performance expectations. May be awarded to an individual or team.
- Spot Awards ($500): For special contributions to a specific project or task, or group of projects or tasks, accomplished over a relatively short time period. May be awarded to an individual or team.

In addition to the STAR Plan awards, departments can recognize specific contributions to the departmental mission or strategic plan via Non-Cash Awards (non-cash, up to $75 in value).
